guys, i think this may be the one. no joke. recently spotted connectors in apple stores match the connector on the bottom of the iphone. this person is an inside job.
i highly doubt it will look like this for a few reasons-not a very user friendly click wheel if it has one there, it will be skinnier than that, and wheres the speaker on that, i dont see one. hopefully it wont be this ugly
it looks like the new Apple IIGS phone...set to come out in April for about $10.99. Wonder if Kings Quest will load on that baby? Where's the floppy drive?
iphone seems to be innovative joining a good mp3/video player in a cellular phone - but when do iphone will be a true pda, using the old and good NewtonOS facing PalmOS in quality, and making WindowsCE/PocketPC even more obsolete than it is?
This one looks warm and slicky but it has awful interface design: the most left and most right buttons will be pressed by accident too often to let the owner be happy too long :)
I think it was a nice move for apple to come out with the apple iPhone. The iPhone has most features consumers have been wanting to have. I also think the price will not deter people from buying the apple iphone. I even think they will sell more then the 10 million apple iPhones they expect to sell within the year.
This is why Jony Ive gets paid the big bucks. Not one of these designs has taken ergonomics into account. They all appear to be predicated upon past design concepts or, even worse, future design concepts in which only artistic aesthetics was the only consideration.
The problem with both approaches is that they do not bridge the gap between what customers are willing to settle for and what they REALLY want.
iPhone 049 is a cool design, but it's also the most conventional. Basically, it looks like a slicker casing for every other phone design that already exists.
047 looks neat, but it's only one evolutionary step ahead of the iPod nano... and the rotary visual dialer is actually several steps backward. What is the point of this other than trying to look ostentatiously futuristic?
046 looks like a Nanon slapped onto a Nokia slip-phone... and with a small screen. Again, looks neat, does nothing useful. If Apple could get by designing a phone that slips unnoticed into the market then this might be a good design... but Apple is known for making bold moves because with their tiny market share, they have to. They're a brand leader not because they introduce ordinary products in each new product class they embark upon... but because in their major evolutions they do something radically different.
045... Looks like a touchscreen, and I'm not playing "let's see who got closest to Apple's design"... but what exactly is this jumble of crap? We've all seen designs that involve many features/widgets thrown up all at once but they're as non-useful as trying to watch the news and read the umpteen tickers at the same time. Discombobulated information overload. The thing you have to remember about a touchscreen is that it gives you the opportunity to present information in layers, so why the hell are you trying to present one layer of lots of information at once?
044... I don't even know what the hell this is except perhaps a Sony Ericsson casing imitation with a dialpad that was designed not out of ergonomic efficiency but out of fanboy nostalgia for the scrollwheel and appropriating a retro look to it. Again, usefulness was not at all taken into consideration here.
043 looks like a swivel design that's going to break. Also, what's on the other side? Why is it a swivel? Is the screen 15 inches wide? You have a built in swivel device called your wrist... you don't need one on a device this small. Also, is this a top level or nested menu? I see no "system function" buttons or menu items to take you immediately back to primary categories... I do see 10 categories here but it's cumbersome, requires a lot of time to look at, and isn't very international-minded. Airports use symbols to cut down on the number of languages they have to print on signs. The same concept is useful in design for reducing the amount of language support needed in software to run phones like this. It's ergonomically one of the goofiest designs in the bunch.
042... I can see here that the first thing someone thought was "phone of the future." I see lots of future, but little else. In fact, I have to squint just to read anything on it. At the same time, I can see that case slipping out of someone's hand and ricocheting off some poor bystander's head.
041... More slip-phone goofiness.
040... Nice, slim, boring. Remember the cheap-ass calculators from the 90's that were the size of credit cards. Yes, they were also all built as cheaply as plastic credit cards, too.
039 - Nano case with stylus? If you have a stylus what do you need a scroll wheel for? Pick one.
038 - Is it a touchscreen? Why is there a scroll wheel. Has anyone among those submitters here looked at a touchscreen interface? Has anyone noticed that the buttons on a touch screen are also the menu list? This thing wastes half its screen space on a wheel that tells you absolutely nothing useful. A wheel is not an output device, it's an input device. The entire touchscreen is an input device.... who needs both?
037 - Here's an interesting concept: They're buttons, shaped like a wheel. Congratulations, you just wasted 1/3 of your phone's real estate on just four buttons.
036 - I see patent infringement in your future.
035 - Who designed this? Playskool? I see two variable function buttons. Great, so not only do I have to click through each numerical button up to three or four times (as I do now with my asinine RAZR) just to text message, but I also have to go through umpteen clicks just to check my voicemail.
034 - Those look like flat buttons. For people who complain about tactile feedback being a problem with touchscreens, here's an example of tactile feedback that gives you no interface flexibility in return.
032 - Backwards evolution. This is off-brand by about four years, using a retired iMac design as the base. Other than that, I don't know what the hell it does. No buttons? Is it the Bat-Phone? Is it one of those phones that rings the town's switchboard operator (in the early 20th century) and I ask for Buffalo 7-2658?
031- Same problem as some earlier designs. No point of reference for what menu you're in, or jump buttons to go to any other menu.
030 - This would be an excellent design if Apple were like Bang & Olufsen, selling you ergonomically ridiculous art that masquerades as technology for $2500 a pop.
27 - 29 - Rehash of waste of space problems.
025 - Rehash of nostalgia without ergonomics problems.
024 - I can see this screen breaking in five minutes. Other than that, I don't know why the hell the rotary is so gigantic. Is it some new kind of virtual Sit'n'Spin for the 21st century? How do I hold the phone when the screen keeps chopping into my hand when I slide it to the side? I suppose I have to set it down when I dial. This phone just pisses me off.
015, 018, 019 - I hope you're just a Photoshop dabbler, because if you were a real designer I would have fired you for regurgitating all the bad designs of cell phones of the past ten years.
017 - Lanyards are for hanging identification cards and whistles, not complex electronics that will annoy the shit out of me by repeatedly slapping against my chest when I run.
014 - This is getting irritating. PLEASE tell me you're just a photoshop dabbler. I see flip phone after flip phone, slip phone after slip phone. What's next? Tickle Me Steve?
Most of these are more of the same but I want to comment on two especially.
006 - Now you're talking. Almost. I presume "wheel" means a virtual scroll wheel. Sure, even I thought this was a good idea when rumors were abound that it was part of the new widescreen ipod design. However, Jony Ive must have realized somewhere along the way that the wheel is unnecessary. The interface can be whatever you want it to be, the input buttons too. So what use is a wheel? If I want to move through my list, why not just push the list back and forth? It's a TOUCH SCREEN... you can TOUCH the information you're trying to manipulate, so why do you need to emulate an input device in an input device?
007 - Here's more Crackberry madness. First, slip phones are good invitations for consumer complaints and just, well, cart-before-horse solutions. Sure, whoever designed the newer Crackberries and Palms thought "Hey, people like these tiny, asinine little keyboards. Let's put one in." But that doesn't address what people really want. Only what they're willing to put up with.
One of the most brilliant things about Apple's iPhone design, which I didn't predict would be as good as it was, is that they seem to have gone back to the drawing board focusing on human senses. A touchscreen doesn't seem like a device that can offer tactile feedback. When people complain that they like tactile feedback they're not saying they like tiny keyboards. They're saying they like tactile feedback. So, I imagine that Apple's designers sat down and didn't ask "what tactile device can we use?" But rather, "How can we maximize the display, the input device AND offer tactile feedback?"
This probably led to conversations about how one might otherwise simulate tactile feedback in a touch screen. Well, physics is one way. When you push an object in the real world, it doesn't stop moving the second you take your hand off it. There's momentum. This is a form of feedback. Add perhaps some sounds (like the ticking sound made by the scrollball on the otherwise noiseless Apple mouse) and people have a sense of where they are, where they're going and how much force they need to apply to move so far through a menu. This is not the same kind of feedback as touching a button but like any object in the real world, it's giving you actually MORE information being captured by your senses... and you probably don't even consciously realize it.
Granted, it's often believed that it's easy to be a critic. Sure it's easy to offer an opinion. But it's not easy to offer a critical analysis. What I've tried to do here is, in my own abrasive kind of way, illustrate the shortcomings that aren't just common of armchair designers who like to do mockups for shits and giggles... but real designers in the real world who get paid huge money and still come up with one ergonomically inept design after another.
Apple leads because they do research on how people think, perceive, and act... and they incorporate these kind of questions into their design process. I'm sure at some stage they had an idea for a virtual scrollwheel but where most companies would have stopped at that, Apple clearly was not satisfied with that answer and they kept going.
If any of you are real designers or design students, next time you do a mockup whether for fun or for a class... STOP AND THINK about how people's minds work: When I push a paper up and down in the real world, what does my brain expect to see? If I want to enlarge a picture, do I immediately think of a series of five odd gestures and clicks or do I think of outstretching my arms in a motion that looks like expanding? Think about it first, and THEN draw.
Don't just try to construct the coolest thing that comes to your mind... It may look like that's what Apple does, but they begin with a very conscientious ground-up process of identifying how people think, behave and work, and build their "coolness" of form around that kind of functionality. That is what separates them from everyone else, and that's the kind of thinking that will make you a valuable asset as an industrial/commercial designer.
Just spoted this one -- from this unknown company called Instantstream.com an they now have InstantstreamTV a killer iPhone application: audio/video calls, interactive video conferencing and multimedia collaboration, GPS and now international IPTV broadcasting, music videos, and advertisement on mobile cell phones. I am not sure but i think its the next generation iphone whti video call and conferencing
take a look, you have to find the page its inside the registration process but its cool.
This guy that I know, Curtis Somoza, told me that he loves the new iPhone. It had a major product release at this year's MacWorld in San Francisco. It seems to have everything you could ask for in a phone. Curtis D. Somoza can't wait to get his hands on one of these new sleek units.
If they chose to call their computers 'Mac' and their music player 'iPod', why on earth are they calling their phone 'phone'?
Even Microsoft has learned from this with the Zune. Apple should come up with a more imaginative name IMHO
I like the iPhone multi-touch technology for easy navigation. This will be the next PDA generation. Get iPhone Converter http://www.iphoneconverter.com/

The Apple iPhone is providing much buzz across the internet, television, and radio, but will it turn out to be all buzz or true benefit? Will the Apple iPhone benefit the “eye” or the “i” in your life? That has yet to be determined! The true test will begin tomorrow - June 28th, 2007.

I smuggled an iPhone into Santa Rita jail this week for my boyfriend Tyrone. It was a little wider than I expected but I was able to "move it on through" with a little astroglide and some ositive thinking.
I cannot believe all of you Apple grropies fell for this device. 1-you have to pay to get out of your exsisting carrier contract to go over to ATT. 2-ATT Edge network is crap and lousy service. 3-ATT customer service sucks! 4- After about 300-400 charges of your Cisco iPhone you will need to send your phone back to apple to have the battery replaced at a cost to YOU of $80. Plus, you will be w/o a phone for 3 days. Not really a business device or for the avid music person... Good first try

I have a question if someone can answer about the 4Gb Iphone. I recently bought one after being a blackberry user and couple things that are concerning- can you cut and paste any email? Can you type in a name to find a contact or you have to scroll for the contact? Is there a search feature on the iphone (not in safari but for the phone database)? For example, if I want to find a company info in my contacts and don't remember if I have it..I should be able to search for it. Lastly, how do you transfer notes into the Iphone from Itunes?
I have bought an iphone Swarovski Crystal fascia which I thought I would share wiv any girlies on this blog: http://www.crystal-iced.com/product.php?id=207
iPhone does not work in the cold weather when the users hands are cold (news from Ukraine). At least 1 out of 100 Ukrainians can not use iPhone if his/her hands are cold (below 36.6C) - screen just does not respond to the touches. Interestingly, number of not working iPhone cases, especially high among Ukrainian politicians :) . http://www.sostav.ua/news/2007/11/15/8/4307/

My iPhone has helped me to be more productive. Clearly it is more than a phone. I find that I use the Wi-Fi mode a great deal. I wish my Apple iPhone had one more app... VOIP. Then, I would have all the functionality I need.
Yes, everyone loves iPhone! Much more with what they can only afford- mobile phones|mobile phone accessories. I agree with `cheryl's office`... iphone is more than a phone. No need to buy desktop computers or laptops. With an iPhone, everything is possible already!

TO ALL WHO WISH TO MAKE GOOD MONEY, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING: Dear internet user:
Greetings! About two years ago, a friend came to me with a letter. She asked me to research the fact that this letter was indeed legal. I told my friend I would review it and get back to her. When I first read the letter my friend brought me, I thought it was some off-the-wall idea to make money. A week and a half later we met again at my home to discuss the letter. I told her I had taken the letter to the post office and they told me the letter she brought to me was 100% legal.
I was still curious about the letter, so my friend explained to me how it works. I thought it seemed like a long shot, so I decided against participating, but before my friend left I asked her to keep me updated on her results. About two months later, she called me to tell me she had received $800,000 in cash. I didn’t believe her, so she asked me to try this idea and find out for myself. I thought about it for a couple of days and decided I didn’t have anything to lose, so I asked her for a copy of the letter. I followed the instructions exactly, mailed 200 copies, and sure enough the money started coming in! It arrived slowly at first, but after about three weeks, I was getting more mail than I could open in a day! After about three months the money stopped coming. I kept a precise record of my earnings and in the end it totaled $978,493.00! I could hardly believe it. I met with my friend for lunch to find out exactly how it worked. She told me there are quite a few similar letters around, but this one is different because there are six names at the end of the letter, not five like some others. This fact alone results in your name being in far more returns.
By now you are surely curious to know what small change I made. If you sent a letter like this out, in order to be completely legal, you must actually sell something in the list; you must include these words, “Please put me on your mailing list” and include your address. This is the key to the program. The item you will receive for the dollar you send to six people below is the letter.
This system works if you will just try it. You must follow the simple instructions exactly, and in less than three months, you will receive over $800,000. Guaranteed!
1. Immediately send $1.00 to each of the six people on the list at the end of this letter. Wrap the dollar bill in a note saying, “Please add me to your mailing list and include your address. 2. Delete the name in the number one spot and move the others up one place (2 becomes 1, 3 becomes 2, etc.) Put your name in the sixth position. 3. Copy this article. Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. 4. post at least 200 copies of the letter with your name and address in the sixth slot on message boards, news groups, chat rooms etc.. . 5. Keep a copy of this letter so you can use it a second time. When your name reaches #1, send out six more dollars and post your name at #6 to keep receiving money. 6. Note: This service is 100% legal. Refer to title 18, section 1302 and 1342 of the U.S. Postal and Lottery Laws.
How does it work? : When you post 200 letters, it is estimated that at least 15 people will respond and send you $1.00,you make $15.00 Those 15 post 200 letters each and 225 people send $1.00, you make $225.00 Those 225 post 200 letters each and 3,375 people send you $1.00, you make $3,375.00 Those 3,375 post 200 letters each and 50,625 people send you $1.00,you make $50,625.00 Those 50,625 post 200 letters each and 759,375 people send you $1.00, you make $759,375.00 At this point your name drops off the list, but so far you have received $813,615.00 Be sure to send $1.00 to each name below:
1. C.S. P.O. Box 25632 Sarasota, FL. 34277-2632
2. J. Day 8440 SweetGum TER. Colorado Springs, CO 80920

5. sarah vigliotti 33 cherry st. plymouth, ma 02360
6. Luis Delgado 1075 N 200 E Orem, UT 84057
GOOD LUCK to all and please play fairly and reap the huge rewards from this, which is tons of extra CASH. By the way, please DON'T try to deceive people by posting the messages with your name in the list and not sending the CASH to the rest of the people already on the list, you will NOT get any. Always keep an eye on the newsgroups to make sure everyone is playing fairly. Remember, HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY!!!!

I'm hoping for a qwerty keyboard for easier text and email. Mobile Safari, touchscreens etc.. will make this device a godsend.

ReplyDeleteanother thing-this is definitely not real, look at the 2 button. not a very good job at the top. you can see them overlaying each other.
ReplyDeletenot very sleek..but a realistic design. Plus the left button looks like a windows logo so i doubt its the actual phone
ReplyDeleteUmmmmm... Windows key on an Apple product???
ReplyDeletelooks cheap to me, dunno if I like it.
ReplyDeleteNo no no, you've got it all wrong.
ReplyDeleteugliest thing on this site

Wow nice idea for a blog, your adds must be kicking ass right about now.

ReplyDeleteAlmost every concept phone is better than the real iphone. I'll never buy it its too big.
ReplyDeleteWow it really sucks, What a bummer.
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen.

ReplyDeleteThis one is too ugly I think, for $499.... Apple always has innovative designs :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, it's a very nice site, and kudos to ppl's creativity.
I invite you all to check out my site if you're really interested in iPhone :)

ReplyDeletetrés beau designe
ReplyDeleteMany of these mockups look great, but leave it to Apple to create something that beats them all in simplicity...
ReplyDeleteCheck out iPhoneTopsites.com, it's a guide to the best up and coming iPhone sites on the net.
This is why Jony Ive gets paid the big bucks. Not one of these designs has taken ergonomics into account. They all appear to be predicated upon past design concepts or, even worse, future design concepts in which only artistic aesthetics was the only consideration.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with both approaches is that they do not bridge the gap between what customers are willing to settle for and what they REALLY want.
iPhone 049 is a cool design, but it's also the most conventional.
That is what separates them from everyone else, and that's the kind of thinking that will make you a valuable asset as an industrial/commercial designer.
this the coolest thing that has gotten out of apple. I love the iphone.

ReplyDeleteI have a question if someone can answer about the 4Gb Iphone. Lastly, how do you transfer notes into the Iphone from Itunes?

iPhone does not work in the cold weather when the users hands are cold (news from Ukraine). At least 1 out of 100 Ukrainians can not use iPhone if his/her hands are cold (below 36.6C) - screen just does not respond to the touches. Interestingly, number of not working iPhone cases, especially high among Ukrainian politicians :) .

Well the design doesn't look very appealing to me. Wonder if it will live up to the hype.

TO ALL WHO WISH TO MAKE GOOD MONEY,
ReplyDeletePLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dear internet user:
When you post 200 letters, it is estimated that at least 15 people will respond and send you $1.00,you make $15.00
Those 15 post 200 letters each and 225 people send $1.00, you make $225.00
Those 225 post 200 letters each and 3,375 people send you $1.00, you make $3,375.00
Those 3,375 post 200 letters each and 50,625 people send you $1.00,you make $50,625.00
Those 50,625 post 200 letters each and 759,375 people send you $1.00, you make $759,375.00
At this point your name drops off the list, but so far you have received $813,615.00
Be sure to send $1.00 to each name below:
1. C.S. P.O. Box 25632 Sarasota, FL. 34277-2632
2. J. Day 8440 SweetGum TER. Colorado Springs, CO 80920
3. Ray Smith 1825 Sylvan Ct. Sanford, NC 27330
4. B.C.A. P.O.Box 13315-343 Oakland, CA 94661
5. sarah vigliotti 33 cherry st. plymouth, ma 02360
How is it possible 2.0 is $499 and 3G is $199. Does it mean they were ripping off money all these days.
